About this Talk

Due to the fossil-based production route, the steel industry is one of the important CO2 emitters worldwide. In the presentation the steel production according to the state of art in a steel mill and new developments for greener production will be explained.

There are different approaches for the reduction of CO2 emissions in steel production using green hydrogen. The different options will be compared regarding the reduction and energy efficiency. The transformation in the steel industry will be shown at the Salzgitter AG as one example, and the opportunity for new value chains in sustainable steel production based on renewable energies will be explained.

  • Motivation
  • Conventional production of steel
  • Hydrogen based production (Carbon direct avoidance)
  • Emission reduction and energy demand
  • Example SALCOS in Salzgitter and new value chains (import of DRI)
